Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica)

Also known as: Stinging Nettle, Seven Minute Itch, Burn Weed, Devil's Leaf

Appearance & Origin:
Nettle wears its defense on its surface—every stem and leaf is covered with tiny hollow hairs that inject formic acid at the slightest touch, raising welts on the careless hand. And yet, this fierce plant is one of the most nourishing on earth, rich in iron, calcium, and vitamins. It grows in dense colonies across the Northern Hemisphere, always appearing where the earth is rich and disturbed—abandoned farmsteads, compost heaps, places where humans have left their mark.

The Witch's Wisdom:
Nettle is the warrior who heals. It stings to teach respect, then nourishes to restore strength. For the grey witch, Nettle represents the necessary discomfort of growth—the understanding that sometimes we must be wounded to be healed, must feel the sting to wake from numbness.
