Appearance & Origin:
Comfrey grows in robust, imposing clumps—large, hairy leaves that can reach two feet in length, surrounding tall stems that droop with clusters of bell-shaped flowers in shades of cream, pink, or purple. The root is thick and black-skinned, white within, and feels almost animal in its weight and density. Native to Europe and Asia, comfrey has been cultivated for over 2,000 years as a healing plant, its name derived from the Latin confervere—"to grow together."

Comfrey is the bone-knitter, the wound-closer, the flesh-mender. She works deep in the body's tissues, drawing together what has been torn apart. But with this power comes responsibility—comfrey heals so effectively that she can heal over a wound before it's clean, trapping infection inside. She teaches that true healing requires patience, that we must cleanse before we can close.
